The Ideal Winter Hair Care Routine – 3 Simple Steps

Winter Hair Care

Most people notice a difference in their skin when the weather changes, but their hair can easily be forgotten. A winter hair care routine is needed to address the environmental changes that are affecting your hair. Since we are in the middle of the winter months, I thought it would be important to run through 3 easy ways to ensure your hair is getting exactly what it needs. All of your friends are going to be asking what your routine is when they see how shiny and hydrated it is!

3 Simple Steps for an Ideal Winter Hair Care Routine:

  1. Switch Your Shampoo and Conditioner

Winter months typically means everything feels more dry. I always recommend my clients to upgrade their shampoo and conditioner to something more moisturizing no matter what their hair type is. If you are someone who is afraid of weighing your hair down, go for a light weight option such as Davines’ Momo Shampoo and Conditioner.

On the flip side, if you are already using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, adding a weekly hair mask could be exactly what your winter hair care routine needs to push through until spring. It’s important you are using a mask that is specifically for moisture. If it is a protein dominant hair mask, and you doesn’t need that protein, it can actually make your hair even more dry and brittle.

  2. Wash Your Hair Less OftenWinter Hair Care
Your scalp will naturally produce oils that are super good for your hair. Adding even just one extra day in-between washes is a great way to up your winter hair care routine. Because it is hotter and usually more humid in the summer, your scalp typically sweats and produces more oil. In the winter this naturally slows down making it easier to go longer in-between washes. Here are a few tips to help extend your style to up your winter hair care routine:

    • Try applying your dry shampoo at night before bed. Don’t rub it in, or brush it out. Follow up with your favorite hair oil on the ends and your hair will look and feel fresh in the morning.
    • Find an easy go-to up style for days that you just cannot wear it down but aren’t ready to wash it yet. My personal favorite is the “model off duty” sleek ponytail. Pro tip: Use a hydrating hair mask to slick back your hair such as The Restless Circle or Oi Hair Butter to do a hair mask on the go.
  3. Focus on Scalp Care

Healthy hair comes from a healthy scalp, so when you do wash, you should really focus on you scalp care. Most people experience dry, itchy scalps during the winter time. By focusing on improving your scalp care during the winter, you are setting your hair up for success for the rest of the year.

Using a hydrating scalp oil, such as the Authentic Nourishing Oil, on your scalp for at least 10 minutes before showering, it will provide hydration and elasticity to your scalp. It also gives you the opportunity to give yourself a quick scalp massage. The massage will increase the circulation in your scalp which help to feed your hair follicles all the good things it needs to be happy and healthy. I have also been loving washing with a silicone scalp brush. It really helps to make massaging my scalp easy as well as removing all dirt and product build up leaving my hair squeaky clean.

The main thing when it comes to your winter hair care routine is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Extra moisture can come externally from switching up your hair products, but you can also keep hydrated by using your water intake throughout the day. Drinking a couple extra bottles of water throughout the day could be a good New Year’s Resolution if you’re still looking for one!

Until Next Time,
