Have you ever wondering what it would be like to have fashion color hair? Bright blues, pastel pinks, deep greens… the possibilities are endless! Which is great but it can also be daunting to figure out how to start. After sitting down with our vivid artist Elayna, I have compiled everything you need to know before getting the mermaid hair of your dreams!
Our Vivid Artist Elayna: The Fashion Color Queen
The Colour Bar: If you had 2 minutes to introduce yourself to future clients, what would you say?
Elayna: [I am] a creative, colorful, passionate individual who expresses themselves, pain and happiness through art. Music, plants, color palettes are also very important to me and can play a part in my work.
TCB: What draws you to vivid hair colors?
E: The creative freedom I truly can have and the way it makes my clients feel empowered, free, wild, individual to themselves and the style they live in.
I also love that there is never a mistake “only happy little accidents” as Bob Ross would say. Most of the time it does not have to be perfect.
TCB: You have told me that you enjoy making custom colors for all of your clients. How do you go about doing that?
E: It depends on the color tint they wish to have but the idea is no one can get the same color unless specified otherwise. The idea is the color truly is custom to them to embody their individuality.
Fashion Color Hair Is a Process: What Does That Mean?
TCB: What is the process of getting a vivid hair color?
E: It is so dependent on the goal and how much patience you have in the journey. Are you willing to lighten? How fast do you want to get there? Do we even need to lighten? Do you want dimension? Color block? Longevity? Do you want your color to scream or whisper?
1. Color Consultation
At The Color Bar, if you are interested in getting a color service with any of our staff we require an in person color consultation before your first appointment with us. When it comes to fashion color, it’s no different. It’s important for Elayna to be able to see the current state of your hair and have the time to fully explain how to get from there to your hair dreams.
TCB: What are the most important things for your future clients to know before coming in for their hair color consultation?
E: Be aware of what the health of the hair is currently.
Are you willing to lighten?
What is your goal after this color transformation?
Are you willing to cut your hair to maintain integrity?
When would you want to come back?
What is your budget and how much time are you willing to commit to being in the salon?
Bringing in inspiration pictures is a fantastic way to show Elayna exactly what you’re thinking when it comes to your hair goals. You should look for pictures that are similar in length and density to your natural hair. You may like the fashion color in one picture but if your hair is way shorter, it will look much different on your hair.
Try not to bring in more than 3 inspiration photos though. If you have too many, it can start to be hard to narrow down exactly what you’re liking about all of the photos.
2. Booking Your Appointment
Once you and Elayna have decided on how to approach your fashion color change, it’s time to book the actual appointment. Somethings to keep in mind when booking:
- Expect a long appointment. A lot of times it can take anywhere from 5 to 7 hours to complete
- Elayna gets very focused while she is working and sometimes will go quiet while zoning in on the details of your hair. Please bring headphones, your laptop, a book to your appointment to help keep yourself entertained.
- At The Color Bar, we stay hydrated, caffeinated, and fed. We like our clients to stay hydrated, caffeinated, and fed as well! Feel free to bring snacks or order Door Dash while you’re in!
- We understand that life happens and sometimes you will need to reschedule your appointment. We ask that you give us as much notice as possible if you need to make a change since Elayna blocks off most of her day to work with you!
- Elayna LOVES making content for her social media of her guests. Please come whatever you consider to be “camera ready” for before and afters!
3. The Big Day! It’s Fashion Color Time!
This part of the process is going to look different for everyone depending on what your starting point is and what you need to do in order to get to your goal but here is a general outline of what you should expect.
Elayna likes to start her appointments off by starting the haircut. This gives are a more accurate canvas to be painting. It makes it easier for her to fully visualize where to put the colors.
Most people will need to have some sort of lightening service before they are able to get to their desired fashion color. What lightening service you need will depend on the placement of your fashion color. If it is your first time ever lightening your hair with us, plan on at least getting a lightening session so Elayna can really get in there and lay the foundation for your fashion color. For more information about what types of lightening appointments we offer at The Colour Bar, read this blog! This is going to be the longest and more intensive part of your fashion color service.
Because Elayna’s top priority is the integrity of your hair, after your bleach has processed, she will follow up with a conditioning treatment. One of her favorites to use is the Replumping Superactive to help detangle and balance the porosity of your hair. This is important because it helps your fashion color to take more evenly.
Certain fashion colors will need as neutral of a canvas as possible so Elayna may choose to pre-tone your hair to help even out that canvas as well.
Finally we are at the point where Elayna gets to take out her artist hat and really customize your color for you. On damp hair she will apply a custom mix of Pulp Riot Semi Permanent color. Some key features of this color line include:
- made with Quinoa based protein to help condition the hair while coloring
- wide range of colors so Elayna can truly customize your color for you
- vegan and cruelty free
- silicone and paraben free
- fades evenly and true to tone
This is where the magic happens! 30 to 35 minutes later and you have the unicorn hair of your dreams.
Until Next Time,
