New Year’s resolutions are loved or hated. People make a big deal about changing their life for the new year. I have found that I have a better chance of sticking to the resolution if it is a more specific small goal than an over arching general goal. For example, instead of having “I just want to be healthier” as my resolution, I get more niche with it. “I want to improve my hair care routine so I can have healthier hair.”

5 Hair Care Resolutions to Bring Into the New Year:

1. Stop Going to Bed With Your Hair Wet

I understand when you’ve had a long day how tempting it can be to just call it a night and sleep with your hair wet. There are multiple reasons why this is a bad idea. First, your hair is the most fragile when it is wet so when you are rolling around on it at night while it’s wet there is a much higher chance of you causing breakage.

Another reason you shouldn’t go to bed with your hair wet is because your hair can start to get moldy. Think about what happens if you left a wet bathing suit in a pile for an extended period of time. Your hair is a fabric and will do the same thing!

2. Consistently Use Heat Protectant

Heat protection is not a myth! It really does make a huge difference in protecting your hair and your hair color. Committing to using a quality heat protectant, like the MELU Hair Shield, every time you put heat on your hair is a fantastic way to improve your hair health.

PRO-TIP: If you struggle to remember to use heat protectant, store it right next to your heat tools as a physical and visual reminder.

3. Prebook Your Hair Appointment Before Leaving the Salon

Life can get crazy and it’s so easy to forget how long it’s been since the last time you were in the salon. Booking your next appointment before leaving the salon helps to ensure you stay on the schedule your stylist would recommend for your personal hair goals. Whether you’re trying to grow your hair out or just maintain the color you have, sticking to a good hair care maintenance routine can do wonders for your hair health.

4. Add Regular Hair Treatments Into Your Routine

Whether you want to add a treatment on to your hair appointment or grab one from the salon to add into your hair care routine at home, it’s so important to utilize them. The difference between a hair mask and a hair conditioner has to do with the size of the molecule.

A hair conditioner is meant to address the surface of your hair strand by smoothly out the cuticle and make it feel soft to the touch. A hair mask has a smaller molecule size making it so it can enter into the hair shaft repairing or hydrating the hair from the inside out. Because these two products are meant for two different things, it’s vital that you are using both in your hair care routine.

5. Stop Forgetting About Your Scalp

The importance of scalp care is becoming more mainstream but I know I even forget to address it sometimes. Make a point of brushing your hair with a boar bristle brush every night before bed (or right before you shower if you’re a curly girl). This is going to stimulate your scalp and increase blood flow to the follicle. This is going to encourage healthy hair growth!

Everyone has their own opinions when it comes to having a New Year’s resolution. Whether you are for or against them, I think taking the time at the end of the year to reflect on what worked for you this past year is important. I think entering into the New Year with intention is key to achieve your goals. Be sure to share with us your hair care resolutions by tagging us on instagram!
