Dry hair is something everyone struggles with as some point in their life. It can be frustrating trying to figure out the source of the dryness so I complied a list of the top 5 reasons you may be experiencing dry hair and professional tips to help fix it.
Top 5 Reasons You Have Dry Hair
1. Washing Your Hair Too Much
Our scalps create natural hydrators for our hair and when we are over washing, we aren’t giving those oils a chance to hydrate the ends of our hair. A lot of times, if you feel like you need to wash your hair daily, it’s because you are using the wrong shampoo and conditioner for your hair. Ask your hairstylist what they would recommend for you as you start this journey of washing less.
If you are someone who struggles with washing your hair too often, I recommend brushing your hair at night with a boar bristle brush to bring the oils from your scalp to your ends. You can even try Davines’ Invisible Dry Shampoo as a refresher for in-between wash days.
2. Using Too Much Heat
If you are experiencing dry hair, you should check your temperature settings on your hot tools. Excessive use of heat will cause damage to your hair making it feel rough to the touch. It may also fade your color which will make your ends look more dry than they are. Using a heat protectant that is safe for up to 450 degrees also crucial to keep your hair healthy.
Using no heat all together is something that can be really challenging for people. I usually recommend to my clients to just try and find ways to wear their hair up on the day before their wash day to reduce the amount of heat used.
3. Seasonal Changes
As the weather changes, our hair reacts to its surroundings. This reason is going to vary depending on where you live but most people find their hair to be a little extra dry in the winter time. When this happens try adding in a hydrating mask into your weekly haircare routine. One of my favorites is The Circle Chronicles, Quick Fix. It only has to sit on for 3 minutes and leaves my hair feeling so soft and hydrated.
4. Chemical Services Too Often
If you are doing too many chemical services to your hair, too often, you will notice significantly dry hair. The hardest part about this problem is that there is no schedule that works for everyone, all the time. Work with your hair stylist to figure out a sustainable schedule that is curated personally for your hair and hair goals!
5. Nutrient Deficiency
If you’ve made a major change to your diet recently, you could be seeing the side effects in your hair. I have noticed with my own hair that if I am not getting enough protein, I will have brittle, dry hair. It’s important to take a minute and reflect on how we are taking care of ourselves.
Just like your skin, your hair can tell you if something is going on internally. I always recommend my clients to follow up with their health practitioners if they are concerned about anything at all because it can be your body telling you to pay attention!
Creating your perfect hair care routine can be really frustrating.
