Life-Changing Prevention and Treatment Tips for Seasonal Hair Loss in 2024

seasonal hair loss

Any significant hair loss can feel overwhelming, but if you are experiencing a sudden and continuous change in the amount of hair you see in your hair brush, you maybe experiencing seasonal hair loss. Most people have approximately 100,000 hairs on their head with normal hair shed ranging from 100 to 150 strands a day. Keep reading to learn more about seasonal hair loss.

Causes of Seasonal Hair Loss:

In order to understand why we are having seasonal hair loss we have to understand the cycles of growth that our hair goes through.

  1. Anagen
This is the growth period of your hair. It can last anywhere between two to eight years. At any given time 90% of the hair on your head is in the anlagen phase.

  2. Catagen
The catagen phase starts as soon as the anlagen phase ends. It usually lasts for about 10 days where the hair follicle begins to shrink and hair growth slows.

  3. Telogen
This is the resting phase. Hair is not growing during this phase but it is also not falling out. Lasting about 3 months, approximately 10 to 15% of your hair is in this phase at all times.

  4. Exogen
It is normal to lose anywhere between 100 and 150 strands of hair during the exogen phase.

Because of the balance between the exogenous phase and the anagen phase, the density of your hair should naturally stay pretty consistent.

This is a graph showing things that will encourage the hair follicle to move either towards the anagen phase or the telogen phase. You can see that inflammation, strep, poor nutrition are all ways that will shorten your anagen (growing) phase of your hair.

Your anagen phase will also shorten with age which is why the older we get the shorter and more brittle our hair tends to be.
